Relict dune marked on all larger-scale maps since the 17th century as the highest dune on the Palanga seashore. The name of Birutė Hill is associated with the romantic legend about the priestess Birutė, wife of the Grand Duke Kęstutis and mother of Vytautas, who nursed the holy fire.
When digging Birutė Hill in 1989, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pagan shrine (alka) and a paleoastronomical observatory (see Žemaičių alka), which existed on the top of Birutė Hill in the 14-15th centuries.
The chapel was built in 1869 according to the project of the architect K.Majeris. Stained glasses were installed in this chapel in 1976 (author L. Pocius). The sculpture ,,For you, Birutė“ by K.Tulienė (1965) is at the base of the hill.
